Old Library Reuse/AIC

The 2017 Special Town Meeting voters overwhelmingly approved the construction funds to preserve, rehabilitate, and restore the historic Old Library building to be reused as the future home of the Art & Innovation Center (AIC), which is a department of the Weston Public Library. The building also houses the Weston Media Center

Grand Opening

A special day is planned for September 14, 2019 as the new space will be revealed to the public after the official ribbon cutting ceremony at 9:45 a.m. Festivities will run from 10:00 to 4:00 p.m. as staff and board members will be on hand to discuss planned workshops and programming that are being offered this fall for teens and adults in the building's two makerspace studios.

Weston Media Center will also be offering behind-the-scenes tour of its new facility with a hands-on experience of filming in front of a green screen.

The AIC has studio spaces equipped with state-of-the-art fabrication equipment as well as more traditional tools and materials for constructing art, jewelry, digital creations, and more. These studio spaces are known as “makerspaces,” which provide the equipment, instruction and community-building resources to encourage hands-on learning in arts, technology, and fabrication.

The AIC will be a neighborhood space where people can congregate in a collaborative spirit to learn together, create, and use specialized equipment. Professional instructors are on hand to teach workshops and longer-term courses. The shared space will foster artists, craftsmen, and technologists in their respective endeavors, welcoming both amateurs and professionals. Reliable access to studio time and resident expertise will make it not only a learning environment, but also a laboratory for creative play and production.

The design and prototyping tools are readily available to anyone with a laptop. The AIC’s fabrication equipment includes 3D printers, a laser cutter, a vinyl cutter, sewing machines, electronic parts, and a wide array of standard tools. These will be available for those enrolled in classes and also for those who have been trained and approved to use the tools.
