Black Road Policy

Within 4 hours after the storm has ended, it is the policy of the Weston Department of Public Works (DPW) to have a bare (black) road surface on all main streets and arterial collectors. Residential side streets and cul-de-sacs will only be sufficiently treated to ensure a safe road. This policy is designed to reduce the harmful effects to the environment of de-icing materials while at the same time balancing the importance of a mobile society and public safety.

Parking Bans

While the Town of Weston does not implement parking bans during the winter months, the DPW asks that when there is a snowstorm, residents please keep vehicles off the street to expedite plowing operations and prevent damage to private vehicles.

Plow Damage & Policies

The town will not be held liable for damages incurred by plowed, thrown or moved snow and ice as the result of normal plowing operations. Further, the town is not responsible for the following damaged items that are located within the public way:
  • Fences
  • Lawns
  • Shrubs
  • Sprinkler heads
  • Steps
  • Trees

Mailbox Responsibility

The town will be responsible for mailboxes that are physically hit by a plow; however, the town is not liable for damage to mailboxes caused from heavy, wet snow being plowed. Mailboxes will not be repaired if they are in a deteriorated condition.

Mailboxes and posts damaged by the impact of a snowplow will be fixed and/or replaced by the town with a standard wooden post and black box. The town will provide a check in the amount of $50 for homeowner’s use for any specialty mailbox and/or post that cannot be repaired.

Damage Control

Residents are urged to place stakes with reflectors along the edge of lawns.

Personal Plow Use

Plow vehicles, while employed by the town, cannot be hired or requested to clear private driveways or walks.

Sand Availability

Sand is no longer available at the DPW Yard. We are sorry for any inconvenience.

No Snow Deposited in Public Way By-Law

Weston General By-law (Article IV, Section 5) prohibits the depositing of snow or ice onto or across any public way, including sidewalks or public property. This by-law addresses the ongoing problem of private contractors plowing snow from private driveways into the public way. This causes unsafe road conditions which must then be corrected by the DPW.

Tickets

Violation tickets will be issued to the snow removal contractor and/or the property owner under the non-criminal disposition by-law.

Good Neighbor Policy

In the interest of your neighbor’s and your own personal safety, please do the following:
  • Keep nearby catch basins clear of snow or ice to prevent street flooding during heavy rains or snow melting periods
  • Shovel out nearby fire hydrants
