Josiah Smith Tavern Reuse

November 2020 - Construction of the Tavern continues to go well, despite a few minor delays. The project is contracted over a 17-month timeline that concludes in September 2021, with the exception of the elevator installation that is anticipated for January 2022.

The Friends of the Josiah Smith Tavern, the preferred operator of the building, reports it has received much interest from restauranteurs and is expecting to schedule walk-throughs in January 2021. The restauranteur build-out, which is not a part of the Town's construction, is anticipated to begin in the fall of 2021.

Background

After extensive architectural and engineering review and design, the construction fund request was approved by the December 3, 2019 Special Town Meeting. Historic New England, which holds the preservation restriction on the building, amended the agreement with the Town in order to allow for the rehabilitation for public reuse.
